Summit Welcomes New Head!

Michael Ebeling knew after his first visit that Summit was the perfect fit. “I called my wife and told her I couldn’t believe the way a junior high student held the door for me and looked me directly in the eye,” says Michael. “The School has created an atmosphere that gives students the license to relate to the adults and feel safe and respected. That is something profound.”

For the past eight years, Michael has served as Head of the Lower School at the prestigious Mary Institute & St. Louis Country Day School, known as MICDS. Mary Institute, founded in 1859, was the first girls’ school established west of the Appalachians. In 1992, Mary Institute merged with St. Louis Country Day creating a co-ed, JrK-12 school which enrolls 1225 students on a 100-acre campus. “Twenty years ago, I was introduced to the wonderfully compelling life of the independent school—a life filled with opportunities that require members to match their emerging skills with evolving challenges; a world of life-long learners,” says Michael. “I was hooked.”

Among his extensive duties as Head of grades JrK-4, Michael oversees the operation of the Lower School, attends to the day-to-day business of student support and is responsible for faculty development, assessment and hiring. His supervisory duties include curriculum design and implementation, program development, budget management and parent education. As a member of the Administrative Team, Michael has worked closely with the head of school, division heads, the directors of finance, development, marketing, faculty development, technology, admission and the athletic director. He has also worked on the development of a school-wide marketing plan.

Since 2006, Michael has also served as Director of Teaching and Learning at MICDS. The Teaching and Learning Committee, which he chairs, includes learning specialists, department chairs and academic leaders throughout the school. Michael was charged with creating an infrastructure and processes for refining teaching practices and enhancing student learning by translating current learning theory into best practice. An annual “Teaching for Understanding” virtual conference, which he established, features nationally and internationally recognized researchers for the purpose of supporting MICDS faculty and other local and national colleagues.

Being a team player and collaborator comes naturally to a man who grew up in a St. Louis family of twelve. As the sixth of ten children, Michael understands the benefits of cooperation. “We instinctively took care of each other,” he says of himself and his siblings who remain close. At the beginning of his recent address on “Learning and Teaching in the 21st Century,” Michael projected a childhood photo of his brothers and sisters. He introduced each one and commented that looking at the family photo always keeps him grounded.

After graduating high school from a local Jesuit school, Michael headed to Lake Forest College in Illinois upon the recommendation of a school counselor. At 18 years old it was heady business to be Michael instead of one of the ten Ebeling kids. “It was the first time people dealt with me as an individual,” he says. An English and education major, he spent summers working on campus, enjoying his newfound freedom. He graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1983 as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. His first teaching job was at Lake Ridge Academy in Cleveland, and it was trial by fire. He taught math, science, social studies, language arts and reading to 13 fourth graders in a self-contained classroom.

The next year he decided to join several of his brothers who were living in San Francisco and took a job teaching 6-8th grade language arts and social studies. While there, a former college professor contacted Michael about a teaching opening at Lake Forest Country Day School outside Chicago. It was an auspicious beginning as he met his future wife Liz at his first faculty meeting. The couple recently celebrated their 20th anniversary.

Michael completed an M.A. in English and a Ph.D. in English Education at the University of Virginia where, among other honors, he was presented The Richard Meade Award for Excellence in English Education. While in graduate school he served as Associate Director of the UVA Writer’s Workshop where he collaborated in the hiring of professional writers, poets and playwrights who came to campus.

Afterwards, he considered a career in university research focusing on the teaching of reading and writing. Instead, he decided to accept the position of Head of Middle School at Lake Ridge Academy where he began his teaching career nearly a decade earlier. He held that position for eight years until he went to MICDS.

Michael developed an early fascination with classroom dynamics and the way students learn. “Louise Futrell understood that from the beginning and it is one of the things that drew me to this school,” he says. Michael has found Charlie Lovett’s book “Onward and Upward- A History of Summit School” to be an invaluable reference. “I have never seen a place so deeply embrace its history, and yet, not be limited by it,” he says.

Summit is thrilled to welcome the Ebeling family which includes Liz, a reading specialist, and two daughters–Mollie, a rising Summit sixth grader plays soccer and basketball and Carolyn, who will join the ninth grade Class of 2009, plays tennis, volleyball and soccer. Both girls enjoy playing piano. The Ebelings spend lots of time outdoors together and look forward to exploring the mountains and coast of N.C. Michael is an avid runner logging an average of five miles a day. He says he uses the time to clear his mind and process the day.

“Can you imagine a more exciting or challenging time to be involved in learning and teaching?” said Michael when he recently spoke at Summit. “A host of complex issues (ranging from the changing roles of technology in our lives to the way cognitive neuroscience is reshaping our notions of intelligence) are recasting how we envision the roles and responsibilities of teachers and students… One thing is clear: As lifelong learners in the 21st century we have the opportunity and responsibility to become part of a larger conversation. Make no mistake, as educators, as parents, we are part of something much larger than ourselves.”

During a recent campus visit, Michael excitedly described a meeting he had with the School’s technology team—“They used the word ‘passion’ five times. It was obvious they are here for the right reasons. Love for this place is an intensively cognitive thing. They talked as much about things of the heart as the science of technology.”

Perched on the edge of his seat it was clear Michael couldn’t wait to get started on the exciting journey ahead. He left no doubt that under his leadership Summit is poised for great things to come. -Barbara Long

JrK Pumpkin Carving, an annual Junior Kindergarten tradition!

Each year, the children look forward to this day almost as much as to the FALL SING. Parents are invited to bring in pumpkins, along with their favorite carving equipment. Each parent works with a team of children to design a Jack-O’-Lantern for their group. Will it be silly, sad, happy, scary? Children draw their proposed images, and much collaboration and compromise ensues, often resulting in a composite of features from each child’s vision!

After the crown is cut out, the children engage in scraping out the stringy fibers and pulp. We enjoy sniffing the scent of our pumpkin and sometimes taste a bite of our pumpkin meat. Separating the shiny, slippery seeds is a joy to some and a trial to others! After washing them, we dry them. Some will be roasted for nibbling, and others will be saved for counting and even decorating art work!

After all the pumpkins have become Jack-O’-Lanterns, it is time for lining them up and lighting them! We usually cut out the lights and enjoy a good Halloween story by the light of our glowing Jacks!

What happens later?
Ever the Seed Savers, we will save our lovely pumpkin seeds, some for toasting and nibbling and others for counting, sprouting, and decorating art work. We’ll measure and weigh our pumpkins and watch them slump and shrivel. We may even put one or two out into a woodsy place to become a home for a little Mousekin! -Deanna Moss (click here to view more photos)

8th Grade Trip to Williamsburg

On Wednesday, October 22, fifty eighth graders and five brave chaperones left Summit for a trip back in time. Stopping first at Jamestown Settlement, after lunch our adventurers spent the afternoon exploring the Powhattan Indian village, dock with replicas of the three ships that brought the English colonists, and the colonists’ fort. Although these structures are not on the original locations they did allow students to imagine the interactions that took place in the first permanent English colony in America beginning in 1607.

After a short ride our young historians ventured into Williamsburg, the second capital of Virginia. The first night allowed students to visit shops by lantern light. The next day was spent studying different aspects of life in colonial Virginia. Locations toured included the capitol, governor’s palace, jail, and various shops and homes in the restored area. Many students ate lunch at one of the local taverns. The evening of the second day included programs of African American music and Williamsburg legends. The morning of the third day found students visiting the Great Hopes Plantation, a fairly new part of the historical area; this gave them a different look at slavery in the eighteenth century. After more touring in the rest of the restored area after lunch students boarded the bus for the return trip to Summit. Want to know more about colonial Virginia? Heart Walk and JDRF Walk

Summit School’s Junior High students have done a lot of walking the last couple weeks! On Saturday, October 18th, thirty-four students participated in the Heart Walk in honor of Sara Bradshaw and Keenan Rogers. Keenan, a current 7th grader, surpassed his personal fund raising goal and could be picked out easily by his bright red “survivor” cap. A week later, over thirty Summit students met in the rain at Wake Forest University to walk for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in honor of Cassie Maxwell and Gray Townsend, two current 7th graders. The orange shirts worn by Cassie & Gray’s Cure Company team were bright spots on an otherwise dreary morning. -Devon Davis

Math Adventures Visits Lowes Foods

On Wednesday afternoon, October 22, the middle school math club – Math Adventures – visited Lowes Foods on Reynolda Road with teachers Bebe Krewson, Tom Shaver, Melissa Cleland, and Julie Heidtmann. Students did a product price comparison of the Lowes brand versus another brand. The students represented Summit well with their enthusiasm and interest with this field trip. -Melissa Cleland

Wagons Ho! Pioneer Day 2008

On October 17, Summit School third graders, their parents, and teachers enjoyed the 41st annual Pioneer Day at the Lewis farm in Traphill, North Carolina. Pioneer Day is experiential learning at its finest. The students could imagine what life was like in the days of the American pioneers by participating in activities such as candle making, corn husk doll making, butter churning, apple pressing to make cider, and quilting. Students also experienced what attending a one-room schoolhouse and going to an old fashioned doctor’s office would be like, with live leeches and all! Despite a steady rain, the participants all practiced the pioneer principles of cooperation, ingenuity, hard work, courage, and integrity to make Pioneer Day 2008 a truly great one. -Roanne Ornelles

6th Grade Production of Annie – Tomorrow is Now!

When we first picked “ANNIE” to be our 6th Grade play, they called us crazy:

“None of the kids will know the show!”
“There are more boys in the class than girls!”
“Nobody has naturally curly red hair!”

Well, we did it anyway, and call us crazy, but we think we’ve really got a great show here. Even more important than the show is the fact that everyone in the cast is still excited and having fun. (This is a challenge with one 6th Grader, let alone 60!)

And the story itself couldn’t be more timely, could it? Set during The Great Depression, “ANNIE” helps us to remember that no matter how grim things might get, the sun will always come out tomorrow.

Well, tomorrow is now, so on with the show…

A Successful Open House!

Many thanks to all of you for your support of our all-school Open House! We had 41 visitors who represented 22 families. Twenty-seven percent were families of color. Most families were interested in Lower Primary, but there were visitors for all four divisions. Fifteen parents and nine staff members were on hand to answer questions about topics which ranged from testing to technology. Parents were especially impressed by the warmth of our staff and students, the small class size and the facilities.

This year for the first time we are planning a second all-school Open House which will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2009. These events are very effective in bringing qualified students to Summit. Click here to view more photos.

7th Grade Greek Studies

Summit School’ seventh graders start the school year with an across-the-curriculum study of ancient Greece. Lasting about six weeks, students engage in a variety of academic and experiential activities to develop a profound understanding of ancient Greek culture and a sincere appreciation for its role in the development of our own modern cultures. Students learn about Crete, Mycenae, and the Homeric tales in World Cultures while studying Greek myths in English and the contributions of Greek thinkers in science. More activity-based, students make Greek drama masks and perform tragedies from the great playwrights, learn to cook Greek food, practice and perform Greek dances, and compete in a series of mental and athletic “Olympic” games. All of these activities culminate in Summit’s own Greek Festival where students celebrate their newfound excitement for one of the world’s oldest – and most influential – cultures. -Dack Stackhouse

JrK Visits Myers Nursery

JrK’s first field trip of the year was fun! They loved the bus ride to Myers Nursery. Mr. Myers showed them pumpkin vines with little pumpkins attached, and a variety of gourds. Students learned that everything we eat comes from the soil in some way, either directly or as food for the animal products we consume. Click here to view photos of all three classes. -Jodi Turner
