The Loma Hopkins Theatre shook with laughter this week as audiences enjoyed the presentation of the annual Junior High Comedy. This year’s play, performed by eighth and ninth grade actors, was Romeo and Ethel the Pirate’s Daughter, written by Writer-in-residence Charlie Lovett and directed by Drama Specialist Janice Lovett. Thirty-six student actors took part in the production, which was a parody of Romeo and Juliet. Audiences of students from 2nd through 9th grades delighted in the antics of not only familiar Shakespearean characters such as Romeo, Tybalt, and Mercutio, but also some less traditional characters like Louie the game show host, a cadre of retired pizza makers, and Gucci and Versace—high fashion visitors from Verona. Complete with a sword fight, pies in the face, a “secret wedding,” Family Feud, and a surprise ending, Romeo and Ethel was a hit with Summit students, staff, and parents alike. Wednesday’s performance was streamed live on the internet and friends and family from as far away as England. The play will be available on DVD and photos can be ordered through insidesummit.org (click “Photo Orders” on the left panel). -Charlie Lovett
